The Pay Off

This year we've made it a family goal to be better about having spiritual experiences in our home. We started by making family scripture study & Family Home Evening* a priority. We decided the best way to do this for us would be to have scriptures in the morning with breakfast, since we always eat together anyway. Also, we've been trying hard to have more intentional and thought out Family Home Evenings.

Well tonight I definitely saw the benefits of this. We Skyped with Grandma & Granddad Hendricks for family night and then afterward Justin was just going to give a quick thought off the top of his head, because it was already past Jackson's bedtime. We told Jackson we were going to have lesson and he ran to the book shelf and brought each of us our scriptures, including a set for himself. Then he laid down, opened the book, and began reading out loud. He said, "And it came to pass...something something...Nephi...something something...and it came to pass" and a few other phrases that I couldn't quite understand. Then he started singing the song Nephi's Courage, which goes "I will go I will do the thing the Lord commands. I know the Lord provides a way He wants me to obey." It was amazing! I couldn't believe how quickly he has picked up phrases from the scriptures, apparently where we've been reading says "and it came to pass" a lot!! Hahaha!

It definitely was a reminder to us to try and make sure our lessons are a bit more thought out, even if we are short on time. It really was a wonderful experience and helped me to see how worth it family scripture study and Family Home Evening are for our family.

*Family Home Evening--for those who may not know is just a time once a week that most Latter-day Saint families get together and spend a couple hours having fun as a family. Usually the time consists of singing church songs, having a spiritual lesson, having a family activity/game and eating a treat together.
